Despite being the home of three NFL teams and three college football powerhouses, Florida is not yet on the path to legalized sports betting. Several local groups have filed lawsuits to challenge the state’s sports betting compact and it remains unclear if the law will be upheld or if sports betting in Florida will be banned in 2022. Until the courts rule on the law, the state will have to find an alternative to legal sports betting.

While the state of Florida hasn’t officially approved any sports betting laws yet, many residents are working to bring legalized sports betting to the state. One of the most recent proposals would allow the Seminole tribe to offer sports betting online and at pari-mutuel racing facilities. This would give the tribe the right to partner with other operators to offer online sportsbooks across the state. These legal sportsbooks offer odds on individual game lines and prop bets. Some legal sportsbooks also offer betting on international races like the Grand National and the Prix de l’Arc.

The legal sportsbooks in Florida are licensed internationally and offer a variety of payout options. Those who are able to make wagers on a legal sportsbook can select their bets and then wait for the results to be tallied. The betting options include odds for NFL Sundays, individual game lines and future Super Bowl wagers. The sportsbooks also offer odds on international races such as the Melbourne Cup.

A state-sponsored online sports betting site would have launched in Florida on November 1, 2021. However, there is still a lawsuit on the books between the Seminole tribe and a pair of Florida pari-mutuel facilities. The lawsuit alleges that the state’s gaming compact with the Seminole tribe violates the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act.

The tribe and the state are appealing the ruling. The Department of Interior has filed briefs to reinstate the compact. However, the main appeal will remain in limbo until at least 2023. The federal government has also reviewed the compact and has not determined whether it’s legal. The Department of Interior has filed briefs in August 2022 to reinstate the compact.

The lawsuit against the Seminole tribe focuses on the state’s “hub-and-spoke” gaming model. According to the Seminole tribe’s attorney Marc Dunbar, the logic behind this model doesn’t make sense.

The Seminole tribe owns the right to operate casino-style gaming in Florida. However, they stopped paying the state as part of the compact last year. The tribe also halted the operation of their Hard Rock Sportsbook app in the state.

In November, the Hard Rock Sportsbook app launched in Florida. However, after the federal court vacated the compact, the app was discontinued. There are currently no apps available in Florida. This means that Florida sports bettors have to wait until the law is changed and the Seminole tribe is able to offer sports betting online.

The lawsuit against the Seminole Tribe also claims that the state’s gaming compact violates a constitutional amendment. Local groups also claim that the compact is unconstitutional because it violates the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act.
